“I knew Mom was having a hard time,” Ms. Parrish recalled. Soon the three of them were in search of a way to keep Ms. Dalrymple close — but not too close. Their solution was to build Ms. Dalrymple a small home literally in the Parrishes’ backyard. Ms. Dalrymple sold the California house to fund the construction, and in 2014 she downsized into a custom-designed, 740-square-foot house that suits her needs perfectly. A.D.U.s, whether stand-alone or connected to the main house, are being embraced by a growing number of cities and states in response to their lack of affordable housing.

During the heyday of the "great resignation," workers could expect to see a 20% pay bump from changing jobs. Now, as the job market cools and companies become more cautious with hiring, the big signing bonuses and high salaries new hires once enjoyed are dwindling. Nearly half of the 2,000 employers surveyed by ZipRecruiter in July said they had reduced pay for recent job openings. As businesses cut new hires' salaries, however, jobseekers' wage expectations have hit record highs, according to a Federal Reserve Bank of New York survey released Monday. I've just accepted that I might have less negotiating power than I did two years ago."

Doug Burgum has at least a couple of things going for him: He is a sitting governor, which is the most common steppingstone to the United States presidency, and he has deep pockets. But Mr. Burgum, the two-term Republican governor of North Dakota, nonetheless entered the 2024 presidential race on Wednesday with a notable disadvantage: The 99.8 percent of Americans who don’t live in North Dakota are unlikely to know much about him. Here are five things to know about Mr. Burgum. When Mr. Burgum began running for governor in January 2016, few people in North Dakota knew who he was either. LAUNCESTON, Australia, Jan 24 (Reuters) - The premium of high-grade thermal coal over coking coal in Asia is shrinking as China's re-opening and ending of a ban on imports from Australia powers a rally for coking coal, a key steelmaking ingredient. Newcastle thermal coal futures have traded above coking coal contracts since June 1 last year - something that had not occurred previously in the history of the two contracts. At the same time, coking coal prices weakened as steel production outside China softened while the global economy simultaneously tried to deal with an energy crisis and the accompanying surge in inflation. Thermal coal vs coking coal pricesAUSTRALIA EXPORTSIt's worth noting that the end of Beijing's unofficial ban on coal imports from Australia has yet to show up in any meaningful way in China's imports, although there are signs that coking coal flows will resume. This raises the possibility that coking coal prices will continue to rally, while thermal coal prices may soften as the northern winter ends.

A related question is also surfacing now: What is the legacy of the British Empire writ large? Bergen: This reassessment of British Empire: You are leading the charge. Bergen: So, are the British in high school as they learn about British history being told a bunch of fairy tales? Are there similarities between the 1619 Project and what you and other colleagues are doing in your reassessment of the British Empire? And I think that’s what we’re seeing in different kinds of ways with the history of the British Empire.
